New Delhi: Surfing the Internet in trains without using a data card seems to be a distinct possibility now that the Railways have received the much-awaited clearance from space agency ISRO for using their satellite for the purpose.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has given the clearance for using the frequency from KU band for Internet connectivity, said a senior Railway Ministry official, adding it will be for the first time that Internet will be operational in moving trains through satellite.

Though Railways had proposed two years back to provide Internet in trains, the project could not take off due to the absence of ISRO clearance.

“ISRO’s clearance for using frequency from satellite for Internet is mandatory. Now that we have got the clearance, work on the project will commence soon,” said the official.

As per the proposal, three rakes of Howrah Rajdhani will be uplinked with satellite for facilitating Internet in coaches on a pilot basis.

Since it is a pilot project the Internet service will not be charged from the passengers, said the official.

Railways have sanctioned Rs 6.30 crore for providing Internet facility in Howrah Rajdhani. The work will be executed by a Mumbai-based company.

Now custom-made antenna will be installed on the locomotives of the train and coaches will be linked through Wi-Fi connectivity, he said.

According to the procedure to be followed, passenger will get a password in his mobile phone after dialling a number given by the TTE. The passenger can make the Internet operational with the use of the password.

If the pilot project becomes successful then other trains will also be linked with satellite for Internet purpose.



नई दिल्ली, 2 मई (एजेंसी)। ट्रेन में यात्रा के दौरान डेटा कार्ड का इस्तेमाल किए बगैर भी इंटरनेट सेवा का लाभ उठाने की चाहत रखने वाले लोगों का सपना सच होने वाला है। भारतीय अंतिरक्ष अनुसंधान संगठन (इसरो) ने रेलवे को इस काम में उपग्रह के इस्तेमाल की मंजूरी दे दी है। रेल मंत्रालय के एक वरिष्ठ अधिकारी ने बताया कि इसरो ने इंटरनेट के इस्तेमाल में केयू बैंड फ्रिक्वेंसी का लाभ लेने की अनुमति दे दी है। इस मंजूरी के कारण पहली बार चलती ट्रेनों में उपग्रह के जरिए इंटरनेट का इस्तेमाल संभव हो पाएगा।
रेलवे ने दो साल पहले ही यह प्रस्ताव पेश किया था, लेकिन इसरो की मंजूरी नहीं मिल पाने के कारण यह परियोजना आगे नहीं बढ़ पा रही थी। इस परियोजना

के तहत पहले प्रायोगिक स्तर पर हावड़ा राजधानी के तीन रेकों में उपग्रह के जरिए इंटनेट की सुविधा उपलब्ध कराई जाएगी। अधिकारी ने बताया कि प्रायोगिक परियोजना होने के कारण यात्रियों से अभी इस सेवा का कोई शुल्क नहीं लिया जाएगा।
हावड़ा राजधानी में इंटरनेट की सेवा देने के लिए रेलवे ने छह करोड़ 30 लाख रुपए मंजूर किए हैं और मुंबई की एक कंपनी को इसे पूरा करने की जिम्मदारी दी गई है। रेल मंत्रालय के अधिकारी ने बताया कि इस परियोजना के तहत यात्रियों को टीटीई की ओर से दिए गए एक नंबर पर फोन करने के बाद मोबाइल पर एक पासवर्ड मिलेगा। यात्री इस पासवर्ड के जरिए इंटरनेट का इस्तेमाल कर सकेंगे। इस परियोजना के प्रायोगिक स्तर पर सफल होने के बाद यह सुविधा अन्य ट्रेनों में भी शुरू की जाएगी।
