IITians Aim to Transform India!

We are considered technology leaders because society has given us the best it had to offer. What are we supposed to give back to society? Should we complain about the state of society?

Can we afford to moan: What can I do?……. If we fall back on these excuses, then we have totally failed!………

Have we ever asked ourselves………………………:-

How can we use our brilliant IQ (so called..:)) to solve India’s critical problems?

How can we bring about professionalism in governance and thus eliminating or at least minimizing corruption in the country?

What would it take on our part to encourage entrepreneurship in rural India?

Here goes a list of some IITians who aim to transform India in their modest ambitions to make the world a better place.

Jairam Ramesh:

* graduated in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay in 1975.
* went for studying public management at Carnegie Mellon University during 1975-77.
* thereafter spent a year at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) studying technology policy, economics, engineering and management as part of the newly-established inter-disciplinary technology policy programme.
* is presently a Member of the Parliament of India representing Andhra Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament.
* has earlier been Advisor to the Finance Minister during 1996-98, Advisor to the Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission 1992-94 and Advisor to the Prime Minister 1991.
* is a prolific writer and writes a widely-read column on economics and public policy called Kautilya in The Times of India.

Manohar Parrikar:

* is a graduate from IIT Bombay, the first IIT graduate to become the Chief Minister of any Indian state ever.
* was the Chief Minister of Goa from 2000 to 2005.
* after graduating from IIT, returned to Goa to work for the BJP as a committed worker of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

Dunu Roy:

* obtained a B.Tech in the year 1967 and an M.Tech. in the year 1969 from the Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Bombay.
* devoted over four decades in the field of rural development.
* provided technical expertise to rural communities, carried out prolonged experiment in environmental planning
* now provides succor to those who became victims of Delhi’s hazardous life.
* Even while at IIT, Dunu and a group of fellow-students were engaged in trying to assess how their knowledge could help in solving problems of the poor.

R K Mishra:

* began his journey 42 years ago in Sonari, a small, impoverished village in Sitapur district of Uttar Pradesh.
* had a time at IIT Kanpur, then at Tokyo University.
* followed were a series of start-ups, with a stint in the U.S.
* Now he is back in his village with a helping hand.
* outlined a plan to set up a cooperative dairy farm to transform life in the village where he was born.
* ……biggest problem in India is ineffective implementation. There is a lot of talk, but little action. That is why my motto is ‘work more, talk less’.” ……

Arvind Gupta:

* an electrical engineer from I.I.T, Kanpur
* went to work for Telco in Pune making Tata trucks.
* In 1978, he took a year’s study leave. He spent that year in Hoshangabad, devising science toys and experiments for the children.
* He then travelled to Kerala to work with Laurie Baker, the pioneering architect who worked with local material and traditional living-space concepts to provide cheap housing for the poor.
* has conducted workshops for students and teachers in more than 1,000 schools all over the country, and across the world.
* ‘Any fool can make a thing complicated, right!’ ‘It’s simplicity which is difficult to achieve.’

Madhu Pandit Das:
* A Civil engineer from IIT Mumbai
* a dynamic visionary, an able leader and a thought engineer.
* is held in high esteem for his contribution to the society, spiritual, cultural and humanitarian.
* President, ISKCON Temple, Trivandrum: (1981-1982)
* Eco-Agri Research Foundation: (1994-Present)
* The Akshaya Patra Foundation: (2000- Present)
A Harvard Business School case study, Akshaya Patra is one of India’s best conceived, technology-intensive social sector initiatives, strategically intervening the education of less privileged children by providing unlimited, free, nutritious school meals to them.

Shailesh Gandhi:
* Graduate from IIT Mumbai
* His visiting card carries an interesting tag: Mera Bharat Mahan. . . Nahin Hain / Par Yeh Dosh Mera Hain (My India is not great but I am to blame for it).
* The former chairman-cum-managing director of Clear Plastics Ltd
* former chairman of the IITB Alumni Association
* is now a full time Right to Information activist and convenor of the National Campaign for People’s Right to Information.

Arvind Kejriwal:

* graduated from IIT Kharagpur with a B. Tech in Mechanical Engineering (class of 1989)
* served as Joint Commissioner in the Indian Revenue Services
* resigned to devote his time fully to fight corruption in India.
* founded an Indian based citizens’ movement Parivartan (in 2000) that has been fighting for just, transparent and accountable governance.
* was awarded the 2006 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Emergent Leadership for his contributions to the landmark Right To Information law in India.
* His work has empowered Indian citizens to fight corruption and resulted in community-led efforts that have uncovered massive laundering of funds and corruption in various Government projects.
